Oproti těmto běžným očekáváním nám však počasí v Novém Mexiku ukázalo svou nevlídnou tvář a nachystalo teploty okolo 5 stupňů a sněhovou bouři! Když jsme dorazili do Santa Fe, hlavního města Nového Mexika a naší dnešní cílové destinace, umrzaly nám zadky.

Day 8 – Snow in prairie

The very first stop today in the morning was in Amarillo, Texas – yes, it was the one and only Cadillac Ranch, the public art installation so noteworthy that many even claim it is the most photogenic attraction along the road. Dating back to 1974, this piece of art consists, as some of the pictures below evidence, of what were either older running, or junk Cadillac cars representing a number of evolutions of the automobile line. From there we moved to the town of Adrian, Texas to visit another prominent peculiarity on Route 66, the MidPoint Café. From the late thirties, this throwback roadside café has sat precisely at the geographical mid-point of R66 indicating that Los Angeles is 1,139 miles west while Chicago is 1,139 miles east. This technically means that we have travelled half-way the road, mileage-wise. Here we snacked on some of the famous Ugly Crust Pies and by far "the best hamburgers in the US", and also rested for a bit while making an interview with Crocodile Lile, the chairman of the Texan R66 association.

In the afternoon we finally arrived in the sixth state of our trip, New Mexico, known as the Land of Enchantment. And you bet it was one hell of an enchantment! Inhabited by Native American populations for many centuries, New Mexico is typically associated with endless prairies peppered with cactuses and buffalos, America's notorious outlaw Billy the Kid and, last but not least, hot and sultry climate. Contrary to these common beliefs, New Mexico showed us its hostile face. Expecting nothing but a prickly sun, we drove in 35 degrees through a snow storm before we made it to Santa Fe, state's capitol and our stop for the night, freezing our cans off! Mountain peaks on the horizon covered with snow caps evoking sugar icing on a donut should have warned us! Wonder what the weather in California will be like in a few days time?!

PS: Don't ever buy Harley Davidson moto stuff anywhere in Europe – it's way too dear (from hearsay in some instances it even seems to be 2.5 times more compared to the US!). Go to the States,  for example Santa Fe in particular, where you can buy anything from a pin to a HD moto for an incomparable price.
